Wisconsin Homeowner’s Guide to a Safe Spring Outdoor Setup

A patio with wooden table and chairs, surrounded by potted flowers and plants, overlooks a lush green garden with trees, shrubs, and a wooden fence in the background.

Spring is in full swing here in Wisconsin and, despite the potential for a few final flurries, it is wonderful time to start preparing your outdoor living spaces. But getting your lawn, garden, patio and deck ready for a season of fun and relaxation is about more than looks. It’s about maintaining your outdoor areas and making sure they are safe, secure and welcoming.

Safe Outdoor Spring Set Up Guide for Wisconsin Homeowners

Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you prepare your home’s exterior in the spring to create a safe outdoor space that can be enjoyed all summer long.

1. Inspect, Clean & Repair Outdoor Structures

Wisconsin winters can be harsh on your home’s exterior. Start by cleaning and inspecting the outside of your home and garage, decks, patios and any other outdoor structures like playsets, sheds and sports equipment. Look for loose boards, popped or rusted nails, cracks, tears in fabric and other signs of damage or wear and address any repairs promptly to prevent accidents and further damage.

2. Set Up Your Deck or Patio

A little spring deck maintenance will help keep your outdoor living spaces looking great and lasting for decades. After cleaning, inspecting and resealing if needed, uncover or bring your patio furniture out of storage. Be sure to clean and inspect it for signs of damage and wear as well, looking for wobbly legs, frayed cords, loose screws or tears in fabric. Replace or repair any faulty items before regular use.

3. Swap Winter Tools & Gear for Summer Ones

Shuffle your garage around to get your winter items stored safely and out of the way while you make room for the tools you will need this season. Clean and inspect your lawn and garden tools, grills, summer toys, camping gear and sport equipment making sure they are ready for use and easily accessible.

4. Check Your Outdoor Electrical

Check to make sure your outdoor lighting, outlets and power tools are all in working order. Uncover and check that your AC unit is working. Replace any burnt out lightbulbs, inspect power cords for cracks or frays and make sure rechargeable batteries for any tools you may need will charge.

5. Tidy Up Your Lawn & Walkways

Get your yard ready for spring. Pickup any garbage or debris blow in over winter. Trim overgrown shrubs, remove fallen branches, clear pathways, secure any loose pavers and refresh mulch to improve visibility and prevent trips and falls.

6. Pest Prevention

Spring is prime time for pests. Remove standing water to deter mosquitoes and inspect eaves, play equipment and the underside of decks and other structures for wasp and bee nests.
