The Spring Garage Shuffle: Making Space for Summer Gear

A cluttered garage filled with various items including bicycles, boxes, pool noodles, laundry machines, storage bins, household items, and tools, with little open floor space visible.

Spring has finally arrived in Wisconsin and along with the warmer weather we can finally put away our winter gear and haul out our summer essentials. We like to call this the spring garage shuffle. But as we are digging out our favorite summer toys and tools, it can be easy for our garage to get disorganized.

Tips for Keeping Your Garage Organized as You Transition from Winter to Summer

Follow these tips from Couple More Guys® to help keep your garage neat and orderly as you transition from one season to the next.

Declutter Your Winter Gear

There’s no sense in putting it away if you are just going to throw it away or replace it next winter. Pull out all your winter tools, equipment and gear and get rid of things you don’t need. If you need a few garage decluttering tips, we have some for you here. Clean up and prep the remaining items for storage, including wiping down all items and draining the fuel from your snow blower.

Clean & Prep Space for Summer Gear

Decide where in your garage you want to keep your summer essentials. Find an easy to access location for summer toys, camping gear, grilling equipment, lawn and garden tools, etc. Completely empty and clean the area, clearing off shelves, wiping down the walls and sweeping the floor.

Haul Out Summer Items

Gather all your summer gear and haul it out of your garage so you can clean and inspect it. Hose off pool supplies, organized garden and grilling tool, and tune up your lawnmower, trimmer, bicycle and any other tools to ensure everything is in working order. Fix or dispose of anything that’s not working.

Optimize Your Space

Before you start putting things back, evaluate your items and your storage space. Would installing shelving, overhead racks, pegboards or wall hooks help you increase or better utilize your space for your belongings?

Organize with Purpose

As you start putting items back consider how they are used and group similar items together. Consider implementing a container system for smaller seasonal items. Use clear bins, label them or come up with a color-coded system so you can easily tell what’s in each. Place frequently used summer items near the garage door and put your winter gear, snowblowers and shovels in the back or up high where they’ll be out of the way until next winter.
