Outdoor Playset & Sport Equipment Assembly Planning Guide for Homeowners

A man uses a power drill to build a small wooden playhouse in a backyard while a young girl smiles and looks up at him from inside the structure. A trampoline is visible in the background.

Backyard swing sets, trampolines, nets, hoops and other sports equipment are a great way to keep kids active and engaged during the warm spring and summer months. But before you start setting up there are a few things you should consider to make sure your outdoor fun zone is safe and ready for play.

Outdoor Playset Setup & Assembly Considerations for Homeowners

Playsets are an investment in fun outdoor memories. With a little planning and careful prep work, you can ensure the proper setup and assembly of your outdoor play equipment and create happy memories for many years to come.

Space

Make sure you have enough space. You’ll need space in your yard for the structure itself as well as space around it. A common rule of thumb is a 6-foot “safe” or “fall” zone around the entire playset, plus extra for any swings. You’ll also want to consider clearance above, especially if you are installing a trampoline.  Hockey, soccer and basketball nets as well as other sport equipment will need adequate space for approaching, shooting and rebounds.

Site Selection

In addition to space considerations, you’ll want a relatively flat area for your outdoor equipment. Avoid low spots that are prone to water accumulation and look for shady areas to help prevent sunburn and overheating on hot summer days.

Prep Work

If you don’t have a perfectly level spot for your play equipment, you can fill in low spots to create one. You may also want to consider installing pea gravel or spreading mulch under and around swing sets and trampolines to provide a safe, cushioned surface that absorbs impact and reduces the risk of injuries from falls.

Assembly

Assembly should be a two-person job. Make sure you have another adult who can help or consider hiring help. Not only does the extra set of hands increase efficiency and safety, but it also reduces the risk of errors. You should also prepare by reading through the instructions in their entirety before beginning to make sure you have everything you need and understand each step.

Maintenance

Be prepared to maintain your play equipment throughout the season. That means regularly cleaning and inspecting. Check for rust, broken chains and worn-out nets. Check that all bolts, fasteners and ground anchors are in place, tight and covered. Replace or repair any damaged parts immediately to prevent accidents.
