Tips for Moving Heavy Furniture Without Damage or Injury

It doesn’t matter if you’re moving across the country or if you just need your furniture moved temporarily for cleaning, remodeling or rearranging. Moving heavy furniture is a daunting task. Lifting and carrying items like bed frames, couches, dressers, desks, appliances, exercise equipment is tough on you, your home and the furniture itself. But with the right prep and supplies, it can be a whole lot easier and safer.

Furniture Moving Tips to Protect You & Your Belongings

At Couple More Guys, we’re experienced in tackling labor intensive tasks, like moving, lifting and hauling heavy furniture, professionally, efficiently and with care. We’ve learned a few things and mastered a few techniques along the way. Here are our top tips for moving heavy furniture without causing damage.

Disassemble Large, Bulky Items

Large, bulky furniture can be made a little smaller and a little lighter with a little prep work. Disassemble bed frames, remove legs from chairs and couches, pull out or empty dresser and desk drawers. Just be sure to label and secure all hardware and screws for reassembly later.

Wrap It Up

Wrapping your furniture with pads or blankets will not only help protect it from damage, but it will help protect your floors, corners and doorways as well. It can also make it so some heavy items can be slid across floors or down stairs instead of needing to be carried.

Plan Your Route

Before lifting anything, you’ll want to plan your route and make sure everything is going to fit. Measure large pieces to ensure they’ll fit through narrow hallways, around tight corners, doorways and stairwells. You may also want to protect corners, walls and floors with cardboard or padding.

Clear a Path

Remove any obstacles from your route such as rugs, decorations and small pieces of furniture that could block your way or trip you up. Prop open any doors you need to get through. A clear path will make the move quicker and minimize the risk of accidents.

Use the Right Equipment

From gloves and closed-toed shoes to protect yourself to furniture sliders, dollies and lifting straps to make a heavy load lighter, the right tools and equipment can make all the difference when it comes to moving heavy furniture, boxes and appliances.

Don’t Lift it Alone

Most large, bulky and heavy furniture and appliances require at least two people to lift, which is why we work in two-person crews. Protect yourself and your belongings with an extra set of hands for a smooth coordinated move.

Use Proper Lifting Techniques

Incorrect lifting can cause severe injuries. Squat down keeping your back straight and use your leg muscles to lift. Get a firm grip, hold heavy items close to your body and avoid twisting to maintain balance and reduce strain on your back.

Consider Professional Movers

Moving heavy furniture doesn’t have to mean risking injuries, scratches, dents and damage. The right prep, equipment and teamwork can get the job done safely, but sometimes you don’t have that, and the safest, most efficient, less stressful option is hired help. Professional movers have the expertise, equipment and muscle to handle heavy furniture and fragile pieces without causing damage or injury.
