Tips for Moving During a Wisconsin Winter

A person stands at the door of a house using a hand truck to move large cardboard boxes outside. Snow is falling, and a potted plant sits near the entrance.

While moving into a new home can be exciting, it’s also a lot of work especially during winter. Winters here in Wisconsin can bring snow, ice, frigid temps and arctic winds, making everything from packing and carrying to loading and driving more difficult. Whether you’re relocating across town or across the state, some careful planning and few extra steps can help make your Wisconsin move a little safer and easier.

How to Prep for a Move During a Wisconsin Winter

Moving in winter poses a few extra challenges, but we have a couple of tips that will help your cold-weather relocation go a bit smoother.

Stay Flexible

Wisconsin weather can be unpredictable and in the winter that can mean unexpected snowstorms and icy road conditions. Check the forecast and plan your move for day that looks clear and warm but be prepared to reschedule or adjust your plans if the forecast suddenly changes to ensure everyone’s safety.

Pack for the Cold

Some items, such as plants, electronics and musical instruments need to be protected from freezing temperatures. Use extra padding, blankets or bubble wrap and sturdy boxes for extra warmth and if possible, move them in a heated vehicle.

Dress in Layers

You’ll want to bundle up with hats, gloves, and sturdy boots – but not so much that it restricts your ability to move with ease, as you’ll likely be bending, lifting and going in and out a few times. It’s best to dress in layers and maybe keep some handwarmers or a warm beverage nearby.

Clear Your Path

Carrying heavy furniture and boxes while trying to navigate icy or snowy surfaces will increase your changes of getting injured. Make sure your entire route is cleared of snow and ice before your move. Use sand or salt if needed outside to prevent slips and protect your indoor floors as well with mats or towels to avoid tracking in slippery slush.

Don’t Rush

Winter days are shorter and winter weather can make everything from packing and loading to driving take longer but it’s important to avoid rushing. Begin early to give yourself plenty of time, but lift carefully, take warm up brakes as needed, drive safely and plan for delays.
